MAFI Rooftop Freestander Installed at Oxford City Council Site
A MAFI MBNL-approved rooftop freestander has recently been installed by M Group Telecom at an Oxford City Council site, demonstrating how the system can provide a robust and adaptable solution for rooftop telecommunications equipment.
Installed in July, the project uses MAFI's freestanding rooftop system to create a substantial equipment-support structure without the need to penetrate the existing roof membrane.
A non-penetrative rooftop solution
Installing telecommunications equipment on an existing rooftop presents a number of challenges. Equipment needs to be securely supported while taking into account factors including available roof space, equipment loads, wind loading, parapet heights and the integrity of the existing roof.
The MAFI solution uses a ballasted, non-penetrative base, allowing the structure to be securely positioned without drilling through the roof weatherproofing.
Protective EPDM rubber mats sit beneath the foot support assemblies to protect the roof surface, while concrete ballast provides the required stability.
For this type of installation, the approach can help simplify rooftop deployment while reducing the risk associated with penetrating existing waterproofing layers.
Designed for demanding equipment loads
At the centre of the system is an L-shaped freestander frame, supported by substantial strutting and designed to accommodate the antennas, radio equipment and associated infrastructure required by the installation.
The system offers a maximum overturning moment capacity of 35.7 kNm, providing the structural performance needed for demanding rooftop applications.
The framework is also fully climbable and incorporates dedicated harness anchor points to provide safer access for engineers carrying out installation and ongoing maintenance.
Where additional height is needed to clear parapets or other rooftop obstructions, optional flanged pole connections allow the antenna support poles to be extended up to 5.5 metres.
A complete, adaptable system
Rather than treating the support structure and individual mounting components separately, MAFI's rooftop solution can incorporate the equipment required to create a complete installation.
This includes antenna mounting hardware, crossover kits, cable supports and remote radio rail systems, helping create an integrated structure for both the telecommunications equipment and associated cabling.
Crucially, the system can also be adapted around the requirements of an individual rooftop.
Building dimensions, available space, equipment configuration, roof loading and wind conditions can all influence the final layout, allowing the MAFI system to be configured to suit the specific requirements of a project.
